Based on a story conceived by Will Smith (the movie’s star), M. Night Shyamalan seeks to reboot his career while exploring the trendy theme of what-ifs involving a post-apocalyptic planet Earth. After Earth strands Cypher Raige (Smith), a no-nonsense military figure of his day, and his recklessly eager son Kitai (Jaden Smith) on our home world, more than 1000 years after humans have left, which means that now, Earth and its evolved inhabitants see us as hostile foreign life forms. At its heart, though, the movie is the story of a father and son forced to bond and survive. No need for a twist, right? Now in theaters. (PG-13) Not screened in time for review
