Dan and Meghan Robson are both graduates of the Art Academy of Cincinnati and since May 2007, they have operated Creative Gallery in Over-the-Rhine. At the end of March, the gallery will close its doors, because the couple will be relocating to New York. The swan song of the space will be a three-month long exhibition of works by the Robsons. This makes perfect sense to me, because the gallery’s aesthetic has always related to both of their own art practices: almost always dense, salon-style group shows.
Dan’s heavily mixed media paintings draw inspiration from art history and tribal pattern imagery. References to Surrealism and Rauschenberg abound in his pieces that are often reworked so that older versions of paintings can be glimpsed underneath paint splatters and new sculpture additions. Meghan’s work employs printmaking and collage techniques, and blends ornate wallpaper patterns with frank depictions of sex and female sexuality. All the works are priced to sell (anywhere from $5-$150) to offset the two artists’ moving expenses. Creative Gallery has been a consistent stop on the Final Friday circuit with crowded shows, DJs and a youthful atmosphere. Their final send off opens this Friday from 6-11 p.m. with additional receptions on Feb. 25 and March 25.
