War veteran artists, musicians and writers offer perspectives on their experiences with military service, war and the return to civilian life this Veterans’ Day. A Shared Window at Calvary Episcopal Church (3766 Clifton Ave.) combines an art exhibition with a concert and reading.
Featured are photographs by Gordon Baer, Joseph Stoner and Ellsworth Cochran; mixed media installation by Mark Patsfall inspired by his 2009 Vietnam return visit; paintings by Colonel Dean Smittle and Ned Stern; prints and posters from the Wounded Warrior Project by Brandon Wells and Josh McDougall; and a graphic novel by comic artist and University of Cincinnati art professor Carol Tyler, daughter of a World War II veteran. The concert will include works by Shostakovich, Bach, Schuman and a premiere composition by Cincinnati composer Richard Bitting inspired by personal communications sent home by veterans from World War II, Vietnam and Iraq. Readings will include poems by Sandburg, Hardy and others in addition to an original essay written and read by Herb Allen, a World War II Army veteran whose 183rd Engineer Combat Battalion was part of General George Patton’s Third Army.
The opening reception is 5-10 p.m. Thursday; concert and reading begin at 7 p.m. The exhibition is on view daily 9 a.m.-6 p.m. through Nov. 28.
