Artist Eric Standley’s laser-cut paper drawings are inspired by geometry from Gothic and Islamic architectural ornamentation “in an attempt to capture a reverence for the infinite.”
The associate professor of Studio Art and coordinator for the Foundations of Art and Design for the School of Visual Arts at Virginia Tech creates mandala-like drawings, cut from separate sheets of paper using a CNC (computer numerical control) laser. Each page may take up to two hours to cut, based on Standley’s drawings, and then the pages are stacked to reveal color, line and shape, providing a physical depth for the artist’s design.
