The story of American art forger Mark A. Landis is a bizarre one: Over a 30-year period, Landis attempted to gift more than one hundred works to at least 50 institutions across 20 states. Though the exhibition opens today, FAUX REAL: A Forger’s Story has an official opening reception Thursday, April 5, which should shed some light on this eccentric character. Curator Matthew C. Leininger first encountered Landis in 2007 while working as registrar at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, when the prolific forger offered to donate several works. (Presumably, he does it for the thrill of seeing his work hung as an original.) FAUX REAL will include many of the donated forgeries as well as materials provided directly by Landis himself for the exhibition and should be a window into the motivations of this peculiar artist.
