Deb Brod, Kate Kern and Migiwa Orimo divide up the Art Academy of Cincinnati’s Pearlman Gallery (1212 Jackson St., Over-the-Rhine) for its current exhibition SAVED.
Kern’s “1000 Eyes” is an oversized work of pieced-together card-catalog cards with black and white transfers of transfixed stares and vintage eyewear that hangs beside her large card catalog, which viewers can browse through and see the established book artist’s source material. Brod’s installations of reused objects are contemplative and abstract; the “Modular Lake, Autumn,” constructed from clear plastic containers, water and leaves, spreads out before “text message: SAVED,” which forms letters from old clothing, art materials and transcendent junk.
Orimo’s back room presents numerous recent conceptual artworks that use rolodexes, Google translator and other means of organization and communication as departure points. Her ongoing “Telephone Booth Project” has been the site for numerous artist collaborations that are archived in a book included in the exhibition. The salvation referenced in the show’s title is apparently community — the connective thread through the three artists’ work is the interactive elements that invite viewer participation.
Visitors can check out SAVED 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday through Nov. 12.
