The eloquently arranged sculptures and drawings in Stellar Attraction: An Installation by Rebecca Seeman, currently on view at the Art Academy of Cincinnati’s Pearlman Gallery, do not reveal themselves quickly. The installation is like dusk, when one begins to see stars and shades of blackness gradually. Irregular forms in steel, aluminum and black rubber have been candidly creased and hole-punched; there is a latent grace to Seeman’s triangulated low-relief gestures. But the work is hardly simple astronomical reverie. One of several steel sheets marked with constellations of perforations is titled “Sculptor,” connecting personal identity to cosmic archetypes. “The Strainer” is a multi-part installation of small metal shapes arranged on the wall as a triangle pointing downward. One crinkled disc retains the embossed brand “The Pampered Chef” on it, augmenting geometry with subtle confrontations of the homemaker’s tools. “Southern Hemisphere” is a striking crowd of silvery forms and their shadows, installed low on the wall. As light passes through the sculptural forms, front and back, light and shadow, functionality and pure formalism are sieved and reduced. The exhibit runs daily through Feb. 13.
