University of Cincinnati professor Cynthia Lockhart presents Fibercations, a solo exhibition of the artist’s sculptural art quilts that go far beyond “crazy quilts” into explorations that fuse fashion influences to African art and inspiration from nature, resulting in richly layered assemblages. Alongside Lockhart’s work is Narrative Figuration, a group exhibition curated by Daniel Brown that looks at a young set of Cincinnati painters that makes a strong case that painting the figure from life is still an area of art that thrums with possibility. Featuring Robert Anderson, Daniel O’Connor, Tim Parsley, Emil Robinson and Tina Tammaro (many of whom attended University of Cincinnati and teach and exhibit at Manifest Gallery, a local hub for contemporary realist art), their paintings often feature individuals going about daily life. It is the artists’ handling of paint and thoughtful presentation that elevates the seemingly ordinary moments depicted.
