I have my special reasons for liking the current show at Carl Solway Gallery, Works from the Gallery Collection. I discovered there that I owned a print by the late Bob Stanley, a pop artist who used images of contemporary music stars decades before Shepard Fairey. I had picked up the print at a deaccession auction by the Denver Art Museum in the early 1990s because it was of a 1960s girl-group that looked like The Ronnettes. I had never researched it until I saw a similar piece at the current group show at Solway's influential and long-established gallery. Now I know.
Solway's show, which features mostly limited-edition prints but has variety, is a treasure trove of contemporary (and modern) art's biggest names: Lynda Benglis, Willem De Kooning, Jim Dine, Jasper Johns, Joan Miro, Judy Pfaff, Ed Ruscha, Andy Warhol and many more. There's a total of 57 artists in the show and it’s up through July 30.
