Competitive dance steps to the fore in Battle of the Year, which tracks the efforts of a former American dance champion (Laz Alonso) who enlists a down-and-out buddy (Josh Holloway) to assemble a ragtag team of talented misfits (Josh Peck and Chris Brown are featured among a group of likely street dancers capable of dazzling and amazing audiences) to recapture the gold. Like the recent iteration in the Step Up series, this Battle unspools in three dimensions and even a jaded critic like myself has to admit that watching top-notch performers twisting and bending their bodies in 3D can leave me breathless. The question will be whether or not the drama in between those stunning sequences will provide more than tired hot air. Opens wide Sept. 20. (PG-13) Not screened in time for review
