The acting match-up in Broken City feels like an old school heavyweight title fight from back in the day when these things really meant something. The movie pits the over-confident champion (Russell Crowe as an embattled big city mayor) versus the brawling upstart challenger (Mark Wahlberg as a tough cop-turned-investigator) in a city mired in the mud of corruption and injustice. This harkens back to the B-movie glory days of the late 1970s and early 1980s, but one has to wonder if Allen Hughes is ready to break off (from brother Albert) and go solo on this outing? Now in theaters. (R) Not screened in time for review
