An independent dog groomer in Madison Township has been charged with “cruelty to a companion animal” after owner Tina Brady euthanized her 13-year-old Yorkshire terrier as a result of injuries it sustained during a trip to the groomer, says the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.
Lacey, a 4-pound Yorkie, suffered “blunt force trauma to the head, bruising around the neck and shoulders and seven broken ribs causing lung contusions” while in the care of the groomer, says the Sheriff's Office.
After Lacey returned home from the groomer in obvious pain — whimpering and having difficulty walking and standing — the Sheriff’s Office Dog Wardens conducted an investigation into groomer Andra Edison.
The investigation determined that 51-year-old Edison had held Lacey down with her full body weight in a dominance/submission hold on the metal grooming table, which likely caused the broken ribs and contusions. A chain or leash was the likely cause of the bruising to the neck.
After being taken to MedVet for emergency care, owner Brady decided to euthanize Lacey due to the extent and severity of her injuries.
“It’s scary to think you drop your dog off to be groomed and she comes back in such a condition you have to have her euthanized. That’s when we step in to make sure the person responsible faces a judge,” stated Sheriff Richard K. Jones in the release.
