Butter

A young adopted girl (Yara Shahidi) in Iowa discovers her destiny when she takes up butter carving and faces off against the local hometown champion (Jennifer Garner). Butter sounds cheesy, but director Jim Field Smith has the talent to carve out

Director Jim Field Smith won me over two years ago with She’s Out Of My League, a geek sleeper romantic comedy about a guy lucky enough to date up — way up — because despite a few silly nods to sitcom conventions, League was an underdog character story that treated both the geek and the girl with respect. Which means I’m more than partial to the idea of this follow-up about a young adopted girl (Yara Shahidi) in Iowa who discovers her destiny when she takes up butter carving and faces off against the local hometown champion (Jennifer Garner). Butter sounds cheesy, but Smith has the talent to carve out a real winner. Opens Oct. 5 at Mariemont Theatre. (R) Not screened for review
