Callinan to Retire Dec. 31

Nov 23, 2010 at 12:37 pm

After more than a week of rumors, it was made official today: Enquirer Executive Editor Tom Callinan will retire at year's end to accept a professorship at the University of Cincinnati.

In an e-mail sent to staffers, Enquirer Publisher Margaret Buchanan announced the retirement and said Callinan's replacement would be named "shortly after the first of the year."—-

As mentioned in this week's issue of CityBeat, which hits streets today due to the holiday, Callinan will become the McMicken Professor of Journalism at UC, which is a newly created position.

Here is Buchanan's e-mail, sent at 10:22 a.m. today.

Tom Callinan, Editor & V.P./Content & Audience Development will retire at the end of December.

While this is a loss for us, it provides Tom with an opportunity to do something he’s wanted to do for some time now:  He will be joining the University of Cincinnati as McMicken Professor of Journalism.

We are in the midst of a search for Tom’s replacement, who I anticipate being able to announce shortly after the first of the year.  If that changes, I will let you know.

I sincerely thank Tom for his efforts, contributions and leadership over the last eight years here in Cincinnati – and his 34 years overall with Gannett.  Please wish him the best when you see him.

Margaret
