After hearing Bastard Complex (Prosthetic/Metal Blade) by Charlotte's Spite, you won't have any question about how they got their name. The quartet dive into their aggressive songs with utter disdain for everything. While heavy in that modern Aggro-Metal vein, the band won't easily be mistaken for any of the MTV Metal boys. Chris Boone's vocals are a big reason why they're so different, singing with a glaring, backwoods howl that recalls bands like Nine Pound Hammer and Scratch Acid. Underneath, the bass rips like bones breaking, the drums whirl like a hailstorm and guitarist Dave Campbell holds down the fort with some plump, slicing riffs. Southern Rock has always had a swagger; Spite give it a heavy, hardcore dose of danger.
At Top Cat's on Tuesday with Karma to Burn, Oxboard Drain and Afterall.
