The Heart Institute at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center has received a prestigious accreditation that puts the facility in the vanguard of the country's network of pediatric cardiovascular health care.
The Healthcare Accreditation Colloquium has recognized the Cincinnati Children's Heart Institute for its groundbreaking efforts to collaborate the worlds of care for both pediatric and adult heart failure, according to a press release from the Colloquium.
The accolade is hardly something new for the hospital, which has received a number of national awards in the past, including third place on the "Honor Roll" in U.S. News & World Report's list of "Best Children's Hospitals." However, the accreditation could set the tone for other forward-thinking organizations and improve pediatric cardiovascular healthcare nationwide, says the press release.
"Cincinnati Children's is one of the few places in the world that offers state-of-the-art viral PCR (polymerase chain reaction) analysis and genetic testing for cardiac disease, combined with expert clinical insight and patient management," says John Lynn Jefferies, M.D., who directs the Cardiomyopathy/Heart Failure Service at the Heart Institute, in the press release.
More than 800,000 Americans are diagnosed with heart failure each year, and, according to the Colloquium, most heart failures some from children born with some kind of congenital heart problem. Thus, progressive, innovative care and treatment is essential to advance a field with the potential to save the lives of thousands of children and adults across the nation.
