Cincinnati City Council member P.G. Sittenfeld was conspicuously excused from a pivotal council meeting today for what staff called "family reasons."

But cut him some slack — his wife Sarah Sittenfeld was delivering the couple's first child just hours prior, and it was probably councilmember Sittenfeld's turn to care for the newborn instead of arguing about marijuana with his fellow elected officials.

The Sittenfelds announced the arrival of six-pound 10-ounce George Pete Isaac Sittenfeld, born about 1:30 this morning, via Twitter shortly after the council meeting wrapped up.

No word yet whether the newest Sittenfeld will go by "G.P."
