Things may get loud in the Cincinnati Public Library this weekend, but people aren't being rude.
The downtown branch of the local library system is in the first phase of its big renovation and plans to work on the skylight and elevators in the South Building this weekend. On Saturday, Aug. 21, and Sunday, Aug. 22, a crane will be constructed to work on these items.
In a website post, the library says visitors may experience some disruptions because of the work:
Due to crane construction, the following interruptions are scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 21, and Sunday, Aug. 22, at the Downtown Main Library:
* Ninth Street between Vine Street and Walnut Street is closed to street traffic and pedestrian traffic.
* The Downtown Main Library's drive-thru is closed. Instead, customers can pick up their materials curbside on Eighth between Walnut and Vine streets. Call 513-369-6900 to request curbside service.
* The Downtown Main Library's parking lots are closed.
Visitors can access the library on Saturday and can get curbside service on Sunday, the library says:
* To access the North Building, use the Children's Garden entrance at the corner of 9th and Vine Street.
* To access the South Building, use the Walnut Street entrance.
* Handicapped parking meters are available on Eighth Street.
If work wraps up on Sunday, the drive-through will reopen.
The library is erecting scaffolding beneath the skylight as part of a longer-term renovation project. During the first stage of the library's plan to improve the downtown branch, the majority of the work will take place in the branch’s South Building, including maintenance and redecoration. Mock-ups available on the library’s website show that the interior will be given a new, lighter look. Once the scaffolding is complete, the library says the South Building will be closed to visitors for 18 months. Most services will move to the North Building.
All improvements are funded with the help of a $1 million dollar levy passed by voters in 2018.
