Cincinnati is the birthplace of American astronomy (it's true), and soon visitors to Grand Canyon National Park will get the full Queen City educational experience when Cincinnati Observatory Astronomer Dean Regas takes over as the park's Astronomer in Residence.

Regas will take on that role for one month, starting Nov. 16. He'll be stationed at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

“I’m so honored to have been selected,” Regas said in a release. “Living and working in such an incredible place will be a chance of a lifetime.”

According to the Grand Canyon Conservancy, the Astronomer in Residence program "offers professional and amateur astronomers, educators, scientists, writers, and visual and performing artists the opportunity to practice and share their discipline under one of the most pristine night skies in the United States."

Regas will "give public talks, lead stargazes and document the sky, including the November 19 lunar eclipse," reads the release.

The Cincinnati Observatory says Regas aims to do several livestreams from the Grand Canyon, which will be viewable at facebook.com/CincinnatiObservatoryCenter.

Can't get to Arizona? Partake in one of the observatory's public stargazes at Stonelick State Park in Pleasant Plain, Ohio (about 45 minutes away).

"The park is situated far enough from light polluted suburbs to allow dark skies, yet close enough to the Cincinnati Metro area to attract hundreds of interested stargazers throughout the year," says the Cincinnati Observatory.

Upcoming public stargazes take place Nov. 27 and Dec. 4. Get full details at cincinnatiobservatory.org/visit/stonelick-star-gazes.
