CityBeat won four awards in various categories this weekend from the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).
The awards were presented as part of the organization's 16th annual statewide competition for journalistic excellence. A luncheon ceremony was held Saturday in Cleveland's historic Flats district.
CityBeat competed in the category of newspapers with circulation less than 100,000, one of two categories in the awards program.—-
Kevin Osborne won a first place award for “best political commentary” for a collection of his weekly Porkopolis columns. Also, C.A. MacConnell won a second place award for “best Rock and Roll feature writing” for a collection of her music articles.
Additionally, Jason Kidwell won a second place award for “best graphic designer in Ohio” for a collection of his work; and the CityBeat staff won a second place award for “best special publication” for Annual Manual 2010.
The awards program is jointly managed by SPJ's Central Ohio, Cincinnati and Cleveland chapters, and winners are selected by a panel of out-of-state judges.
