When we last spoke to Bobcat Goldthwait, the stand-up comic turned film director had what he described as a far-fetched notion to make a film based on The Kinks album School Boys in Disgrace. It might not be that far-fetched after all.
“It’s coming along,” Goldthwait says. “If things keep moving the way they are, I would expect hopefully at the beginning of next year to be in London and filming. (Kinks leader Ray Davies) is on board as one of the producers.” Goldthwait was in England promoting the film World’s Greatest Dad and was able to “take a few meetings” with the Rock legend.
Back in the U.S., Goldthwait continues to do more stand-up, sometimes for audiences that don’t realize that he started as a comic. “They think I’m this guy that acted silly in a few movies and then went into stand-up.” Either way, he still manages to get crowds going. “Right now I’ve been talking about there being no God,” he says, “which seems to upset people. But I guess I like pushing buttons and it’s things that interest me.”
The negative reactions don’t deter him at all. “It makes me want to do it more,” he says.
Goldthwait performs at Cincinnati Brew Ha-Ha! (along with 49 other comedians) at Sawyer Point downtown; his set is 5 p.m. Friday. The comedy is free, beer wristbands are $5 and beer tickets are $1 each.
