“I like to talk about the social issues that make people uncomfortable,” says comedian Dan Davidson. “People in Cincinnati think they’re conservative, but they’re really not. It’s no different than where I grew up.” That would be in Lafayette, Ind., home to Purdue University. “I like to call Indiana ‘God’s country, if God doesn’t like scenery.’” Davidson attended Purdue, briefly. “I didn’t finish Purdue,” he admits, “and by not finishing I mean barely got started.” A graphic design major, he quickly realized he didn’t have the discipline for college. In retrospect he finds that odd. “I think it takes more discipline to be a comedian, if you really want to work at it,” he says. One particular issue Davidson likes to address on stage is gay marriage. “That’s the one. I always hear ‘it’s a choice to be gay,’ so I challenge the audience to be gay right now.” This doesn’t go over well with some club owners, particularly ones in the south. Davidson insists that it’s not meant to offend. “I do it with my personality,” he says. “So, even people that are opposed to my view still don’t mind me saying those things. Occasionally you’ll see some people fold their arms and close up.” Thursday-Sunday at Go Bananas in Montgomery.
