Jimmy Dore is obviously passionate about two things: politics and comedy. His philosophy on both is deeply intertwined. “Comedy should speak truth to power,” he says from his home in Southern California. “It should always be aimed upward. When it’s aimed downward, it’s called bullying.” Dore has no time for comics who make fun of the homeless or the obese, for example. “There are more worthy targets,” he says. “Oh, finally, someone’s making fun of fat chicks. And somebody take the homeless down a few pegs.” He would rather set his sights on the mighty in our society like the Wall Street bankers. “If I could screw my wife half as good as Wall Street has been screwing us,” he says, “I wouldn’t have to go through her emails.” When not on stage, Dore hosts a podcast, Comedy and Everything Else, and a radio show that’s also available as a podcast called The Jimmy Dore Show. The former deals with the world of comedy. The latter is more along the lines of The Daily Show and Real Time with Bill Maher, but with its own distinct and hilarious way of looking at news and politics.
