A veteran of the New York comedy scene, Kurt Metzger has quite an impressive résumé. He has appeared on Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham as well as his own half-hour special for that network. He was also a regular on VH-1’s Best Week Ever. More recently, you might have seen him on Important Things with Demetri Martin.
Having so many connections at Comedy Central has also led to a variety of gigs in the Big Apple, some better than others. For example, fellow comedian Paul Mecurio helped Metzger land a stint doing audience warm up for Who Wants to be a Millionaire, the daytime edition. “The people that hold up signs for The Today Show,” he says. “Those people become demons for free T-shirts.”
He explains that his kind of humor just wasn’t a good fit for that audience. “This guy got six months in jail for posing as a gynecologist and doing fake exams in a hotel room on the Jersey turnpike,” he tells a club audience. “He did seven of them, and only got six months for that. That almost makes it worth trying, doesn’t it?”
Metzger performs at Go Bananas in Montgomery Thursday through Sunday. Tickets are $8-$12.
