“I like my comedy to make you think and laugh at the same time,” Kyle Grooms says. “I like it to be real. I like it to have some kind of focus.” Grooms originally got into comedy as a hobby. After a few years he realized he was good at it and left his job at a Miami TV station to pursue comedy full time. These days he’s talking about American culture, among other topics. “There’s so much going on,” he says, “every week there’s something new.” He even entertains foreign audiences with his observations about life in the U.S., and those crowds dig it. “I do the same stuff because they study so much of our culture and get all of our TV, all of our media. They like to hear what’s going on with us.” Though not an impressionist by trade, Grooms has been getting a lot of attention lately with his spot-on Barack Obama impersonation. “I was mentioned in Time magazine as having one of the best Obama impressions. I got an honorable mention,” he laughs. “I thought that was cool.” Kyle Grooms performs at Go Bananas Thursday-Sunday. $8-$12.
