It’s hardly a coincidence that comedian Nick Griffin is a fixture on all of the late night talk shows. “I watched the Tonight Show and Letterman quite a bit when I was young,” he explains, “and was always fascinated by comics and looked for them to be on.”

It wasn’t until he was in college that the thought of being a comedian for a living occurred to him. “I don’t know if it was lack of confidence or if I wasn’t sure that’s what people like me did,” he says. For years he wrote down jokes and funny ideas, unsure if they would ever be told on stage.

At the behest of friends in college, he went on stage at an open mic in his hometown of Kansas City. “I really dug it. I got the bug immediately,” he says. As college drew to a close, he still hadn’t given much thought to a career. “I liked writing, and maybe thought I was going to be a journalist, but I hadn’t really thought about it. It’s lucky I found this. Or a curse. I still haven’t decided.”

Thursday, April 18-Sunday, April 21. $8-$15. Go Bananas Comedy Club, 8410 Market Place Lane, Montgomery, 513-984-9288, gobananascomedy.com.
