Being a teacher in the Dayton City Schools, however briefly, taught Ryan Singer at least one valuable skill that he took into his stand-up comedy career. “I think more than anything it taught me room control,” he says. “These were just 10- and 11-year-olds, and they weren’t listening to anything. It taught me crowd control and not to lose my temper. How to be clean. You can’t be dirty in front of 10-year-olds.” Feeling he wasn’t really qualified to teach beyond the substitute level, Singer eventually pursued his life-long dream. Although at first he didn’t exactly know what that dream was. “When I was really young I wanted to be a priest.” Turns out his aspirations were misplaced. “I just wanted to be on stage, and that was the only person I knew that was on stage at that point in my life.”
These days Singer travels the Midwest, and is steadily building a following. “It’s a lot of driving, that’s for sure. A lot of driving. I’ve always been really good at driving, and what I mean by that is, I’ve always been able to drive long distances. I was either born to be trucker, or a road comic.” Singer’s new album, How to Get High Without Drugs was released on Dec. 16 and is available through iTunes. Singer performs at Go Bananas in the Festival market Place, Montgomery, Wednesday December 23 and Saturday-Sunday December 26-27. Dave Waite also performs. Tickets are $8-$12.
