Don’t feel badly if you’re in the minority of folks who don’t recognize Tom Wilson from the film Back to the Future or the cult TV series Freaks and Geeks. Throughout his TV and film career, Wilson has been a headlining stand-up comic.

“The weird thing is people come to my shows and say ‘I read this article about you,’ or ‘I heard you on the radio. I’m sorry, I never saw Back to the Future or Freaks and Geeks.’ You don’t have to apologize. (My stand-up show) works on its own. You don’t need the pop culture background in order to understand what I’m talking about.” That being said, he still does the hilarious “Question Song,” just to make sure everyone is on the same page (“If you think I haven’t heard these questions,” Wilson says in the intro, “here’s a song that tells you just how often I do”). Other topics covered include Wilson’s struggle with being a middle-aged man in America. And still sings the popular “The Daughter Song,” even though his little girl is all grown-up. “Dads love it,” the stand-up says. “It sells two DVDs at least per show. A guy will come and ask ‘Is that daughter song on it? O.K. I’ll take one.’ ”

Wilson performs at The Funny Bone on the Levee in Newport Thursday-Sunday. Go here for show times and ticket information.
