Phammilly Impulze at The Overflow

It's hard enough to get people in Cincinnati to go out to see original local music on the weekends. So, on a Tuesday night, it would appear to be downright impossible to lure the masses.

But if you're ever feeling like a little live music on Tuesday and you wander into The Overflow on Main Street, you'll absolutely not be alone.

Since earlier this year, local Hip Hop crew Phammilly Impulze have been drawing a consistent crowd to the OTR establishment. A mixed crowd of club regulars and younger attendees — the club allows 18 and up on Tuesdays — suck down Red Bulls and cocktails and bob their heads to the live Hip Hop sounds of PI, a youthful live band fronted by a dreaded lead MC who aptly weaves his way in and out of the grooves with creative rhymes and a lively stage presence. The band itself is incredibly tight, laying down funky, pulsating grooves with bass, drums, keys and guitar.

There's always a healthy dose of spontaneity to the proceedings. On one occasion, the closing freestyle battle got so intense the band had to call it a night. And if you wander in earlier, you'll catch the band — who also play other venues around town regularly — capably cruising through the odd cover version or snippet, be it Rancid, The Beatles or Outkast.

With a crowd some bands playing weekends would kill for, Phammilly Impulze and The Overflow seem to have found a way to make an off-night especially "on."
