Lots of local non-profits are looking for some help

Got any extra time on your hands? A need to help others? A desire to look at the world beyond the end of your nose?

There are a number of volunteer opportunities in the Greater Cincinnati area for red-blooded American youth like you. Consider getting involved. Hey, it beats studying.

ARC Companions: The organization, which promotes equal opportunities for people with mental retardation, seeks volunteers to spend time with its clients. 821­2113, ext. 106.

Boone County CASA: Boone County Court Appointed Special Advocates needs adult volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children. Training provided.


Brighton Center: The center is seeking volunteers for its Center for Employment Training and its Project Safe Place. 491­8303, ext. 2026.

Caracole: The non-profit agency, providing safe, secure and affordable housing for persons living with HIV/AIDS, seeks volunteer caregivers. 761­1480.

Cincinnati Arts Association: Seeking volunteers for the Aronoff Center for the Arts. Volunteers are needed for the art gallery, administrative office, information desk and ushers. Volunteers receive invitations to select dress rehearsals of performances. 977­4113.

Cincinnati Association for the Blind: Volunteers are needed for radio reading services and to read to people who are blind or otherwise print-impaired. Also needed are volunteer drivers and office support. Training and support is provided. 221­8558.

Cincinnati Observatory Center: Training will be provided to volunteers for astronomy assistants, membership database entry, early childhood teachers and librarian or historical archivist. 321­5186.

Civic Garden Center: This non-profit organization, promoting gardening and environmental responsibility, seeks volunteers for gardening, horticultural research, reception desk, garden shop sales and hands-on gardening education in elementary schools. 221­0981.

Greenacres Foundation: This education center needs volunteers interested in working with children teaching outdoor education classes, working in the office or working with cattle, sheep and donkeys. Volunteers are needed during business hours Monday-Friday. 591­4227, ext. 221.

IMAGO Earth Center: This family-oriented education facility is looking for volunteers to help with teaching, trail maintenance, prop making, carpentry, gardening and special events. 921­5124.

Inclusion 2000: This is a three-year grassroots project that seeks to improve the lives of people with disabilities by promoting permanent changes in our businesses, communities and our minds. Wellness Community: The free support network for people fighting cancer seeks volunteers to help out in the office. 791­4060.

Women Helping Women: Offering services to victims of sexual assault, incest and domestic violence, this non-profit agency seeks volunteers to respond to calls on the 24-hour PROTECT Hotline, provide hospital accompaniment to rape victims and do data entry and clerical work. 977­5541. ©
