Laura Mitchell, the superintendent of Cincinnati Public Schools, is resigning after the academic year ends, she announced Monday.

She won't have much downtime, though, as a press release on Tuesday shows that Mitchell soon will lead Beech Acres Parenting Center.

During a May 10 school board meeting, Mitchell shared her resignation from the position she's held since 2017, saying that she would be pursuing an "unexpected professional opportunity."

Under Mitchell's watch, CPS enrollment grew from 64.3% to 68.5%. She's been employed by CPS in various roles for 27 years.

Mitchell's final day will be June 11, and the board will announce an interim superintendent by May 24.

"I wish you the best in your next endeavor and have no doubt of your success," CPS board president Carolyn Jones told Mitchell during the meeting. "You have served our students, staff and community with intelligence, grace and integrity. Personally, I will greatly miss your friendship and guidance."

Mitchell heads to Beech Acres Parenting Center on June 15, where she will become its president and CEO. Michell has served on its board of directors since 2016 and will replace Jim Mason, who is retiring after 40 years with the organization.

"I’m excited to embrace this new calling as President and CEO of Beech Acres Parenting Center and build on the achievements of the past 42 years under Jim’s leadership," Mitchell says in a May 11 press release. "I look forward to being a part of the effort to help more children, families and caregivers unlock the power they already have to fully thrive during these challenging times."
