Colin Farrell stands at the crossroads. He’s a good looking actor known for a brand of old-fashioned masculine intensity that doesn’t quite seem to be of or for this modern screen world, but he finds ways to slip into character roles that allow him to breathe real life into otherwise flat frames. But let’s not jump to any conclusions about Dead Man Down, his latest foray as a lead. It looks like flashy gangster glory, meaning lots of bullets and torture as he plays a former heavy lured by a damaged woman (Noomi Rapace) to go after his old boss (Terrence Howard), but the strong and intriguing cast is working under the direction of Niels Arden Oplev who gave us the original first installment of the Swedish series The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Okay, so maybe it’s understandable if we get just a little stoked. Now in theaters. (R) Not screened in time for review
