The Drop Inn Center and Cincinnati City Center Development Corporation (3CDC) announced a deal on Nov. 22 to move the region’s largest homeless shelter from its current location in Over-the-Rhine to Queensgate.
3CDC has been interested in moving the shelter since it began its efforts to revitalize Over-the-Rhine and parts of downtown, which some label gentrification.
Josh Spring, executive director of the Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coalition, said in a statement that government officials and developers should be helping maintain affordable housing in all parts of the city instead of moving poor people to other neighborhoods.
“3CDC has spent hundreds of millions of dollars gentrifying Over-the-Rhine and the Central Business District,” he wrote in an email. “We must create policy and spending that breeds opportunity, inclusiveness and real development — for everyone.”
