Started in 1970, the Ohio Sauerkraut Festival served 528 pounds of sauerkraut to about 1,500 visitors on its first go-round.
Now, in its 44th year, the community festival kicks off Saturday for a larger weekend of food, arts and crafts and a ton of sauerkraut. There will be sauerkraut pizza, sauerkraut donuts, sauerkraut pies, cabbage rolls, Polish cabbage soup, pork and sauerkraut combos and many other non-sauerkraut items.
9 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday; 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday. Free. Downtown Waynesville, Ohio, sauerkrautfestival.com.
