In a world that’s becoming more virtual every day, young people have an almost visceral need to get their hands dirty and make things, says David Pescovitz, research director for Institute of the Future in Palo Alto, Calif. This “maker culture” can irritate corporate America when established products get hacked, reimagined and changed, but he argues that smart companies will embrace these ideas — not reject them because the ideas come from outside their corporate walls.

Pescovitz shares his insights into the do-it-yourself “maker” ethic as keynote speaker at Bold Fusion, the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber’s annual YP-apalooza.

The Cincinnati native has been living the DIY life since graduating from UC and heading west to grad school in Berkeley: He’s co-editor of BoingBoing.net, editor-at-large of MAKE magazine, longtime writer for Wired magazine, author of several books and even a one-time contributing writer for CityBeat.

Pescovitz heads an impressive panel of speakers at Bold Fusion, which is 1-5 p.m. at the Westin Hotel downtown, followed by a happy hour mixer. $45-$85.
