When Americans hear the date Sept. 11, 2001, we all think about the same event. It sticks in our minds and hearts with such intensity that we can never forget. The same cannot be said for Dec. 27, 2008-Jan. 18, 2009. What is now being referred to as the “Gaza Massacre” is still unknown to many people in our country. For three weeks at the end of 2008, Israel inflicted airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, killing almost 1,500 Palestinians. And for many Muslims living in the U.S., the lack of knowledge about this incident is unfortunate. Cousins Reema Jallaq and Fadi Shalash started the Gaza Massacre Rally event in an attempt to change this. “I have contacted a lot of local news channels, but have never heard back,” Jallaq said. “We don’t see a lot of it (Gaza) on the news channels.” The Gaza Massacre Rally starts at 1 p.m. Sunday in front of Hughes High School in Clifton and will go until approximately 4 p.m. Along with the cousins, University of Cincinnati group The Muslim Student Association will be there to spread awareness. “I am a Palestinian,” Jallaq said. “I almost forgot this was the one-year mark and I want people never to forget.” Donations are accepted and T-shirts will be available for purchase for $12.
