What happens to a bar deferred? What happens when the taps run dry and no one knows your name? You call on your friends and a helping hand from the neighbors, open under new and bright local ownership and change … everything. What promises to be a true Northside original, Mayday (formerly The Gypsy Hut) officially opens its doors this Saturday.
Owners, managers and janes-of-all-trades Vanessa Barber and Kim Maurer have been working feverishly to reopen and restore the bar to its bygone glory and more. “A neighborhood bar with a friendly vibe,” Barber and Maurer envision Mayday as “a creative outlet for the interesting things that are happening in the city.” Harnessing this enthusiasm, the duo looked to Northside (and its neighbors) for inspiration and utility. Mayday’s vintage décor features furniture from Red Polly with upholstering by Northsiders Helen Smith and Tori Kadish. Mayday's logo was designed by local artists Aaron Cross and Nate Abney from Designs by Dana. Musicians Stuart MacKenzie (The Lions Rampant) and Beth Harris (The Hiders) and visual artist (and original Gypsy Hut drink slinger) Paul Coors fill out the ranks behind the bar. Even the hot dogs and homemade condiments on the menu are made with as many locally grown, organic ingredients as possible.
Performances by The Lions Rampant, Oxford Cotton and Earthquakes (DJs Kendall Bruns and John Hogan) mark the occasion. 6 p.m. Saturday at Mayday.
