Get your Bavarian swag in order and start prepping your biceps because the bier steins will be overflowing as Newport kicks off one of its biggest festivals of the year, Oktoberfest. Start your weekend right by indulging yourself to the bottom of the liter for Friday’s official grand opening at 6 p.m. And if dancing isn’t your forte, I suggest knocking a few more back, because The Eizian Dance Group is going to be bringing this accordion-loving house down, Munich-style.

Defog your beer goggles for Saturday’s parade featuring the Germania Jagdhorn Group. After you’ve chicken danced yourself to death, gather ’round for the official Keg Tapping Ceremony to brag about your keg stand techniques at 6 p.m.

Let your nose direct you to the sauerkraut balls, fried pickles and cream puffs underneath the Fest Tent. You might even get lucky enough to wrap your lips around some genuine German wienerschnitzel. So come out rain or shine and relish in the free admission and fun of Newport’s Oktoberfest.

Friday’s shenanigans will take place from 5-11 p.m. Come earlier on Saturday as the festivities run from noon-11 p.m. And don’t forget Sunday, the last day you’ll be able to use your heritage as an excuse to drink, from noon-9 p.m. The event is on Riverboat Row at Newport on the Levee.
