The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center continues its celebration of Black History Month with a visit from Roland S. Martin, a veteran journalist and author whose latest book, the verbosely titled The First: President Barack Obama's Road to the White House as Originally Reported by Roland S. Martin, was just published. A contributor to CNN's so-called “Best Political Team on Television,” Martin has been a tornado of journalistic activity over his awards-strewn, 20-year career, a period which has seen the Houston native work at nearly every type of media entity, from being executive editor at the Chicago Defender (perhaps the nation's most important/historic black newspaper) to his work as a syndicated columnist to his various forays into radio and television.
Martin will bring his experience and insight to a Freedom Center (50 East Freedom Way, Downtown) discussion Thursday that will look at the “historical context of civil rights, how the vestiges of said struggles manifest today and what we all can do to take steps toward freedom in our own lives.” The 6:30 p.m. discussion is free and open to the public, but reservations are recommended.
