Local designer, entrepreneur and DAAP-grad Rosie Kovacs found beauty and history in an abandoned brush manufacturing and janitorial supply building in Brighton. Along with co-founder Hayes Shanesy, she transformed that “remnant of another era” into The Brush Factory, a functioning studio and retail space, in December 2009.

Keeping the spirit of the location alive, they started selling clothing, jewelry and design goods from local and national artists and craftspeople.

After less than a year, Kovacs and Shanesy are opening a second Brush Factory location in Oakley. The new location at 3227 Madison Road will offer hand-sewn sophisticated fashion for women of all ages by Kovacs, wooden furniture and accessories by Shanesy, jewelry by fellow DAAP-grad Lynda Lucas of Vein jewelry, and more from designers from New York and San Francisco. They’re celebrating the store’s soft opening from 7-10 p.m. Friday with music, complimentary hors d’oeuvres and spirits and a glimpse into the factory’s Autumn/Winter 2010 collection.

Regular store hours begin Sept. 17. The original location in Brighton will be open for special events and serve as the primary design and production studio.
