The 11th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance memorializes those who were killed because of anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. It started in response to the death of Rita Hester, who was murdered on Nov. 28, 1998 in San Francisco. Her unsolved murder spawned a “Remembering Our Dead” Web project and a candlelight vigil in 1999. Now people gather yearly to pay respect to the transsexual victims of hate crimes and to call attention to the ongoing threat of violence against the gender-variant. A community vigil will be followed by a reception. 7:30 p.m. New Spirit Metropolitan Community Church.
