Tonight marks the beginning of a “long weekend” of Thanksgiving merriment, a chance to step back and remember the really important things in life, like family, friends and overeating like competitive eating champ Takeru Kobayashi with the munchies. Tonight is also the alleged “busiest bar night of the year” and the next few days are top-loaded with strong live music options, suggesting a lot of people sometimes really need an escape from Thanksgiving’s loving spirit (scour CityBeat’s club listings for your escape plan).
One option tonight is an increasingly rare local appearance by modern Funk faves Freekbass.—-
The hard-touring crew (recent recipient of the 2010 Cincinnati Entertainment Award for Funk/R&B) continues its new Thanksgiving tradition for Cincinnatians — a funky good night of grooves on Turkey Day Eve — at Silverton's Play By Play Cafe. With an opening set by Hip Hop/Jazz/Rock/Fusion ensemble Eclipse, Freekbass’ fourth year of pre-Thanksgiving funkiness is a great way to work off energy before a full day of sitting, eating, watching football and other decidedly non-funky forms of inertia.
Freekbass fans will know that this is the group’s first hometown show of 2010, unusual for the veteran squad. Frontman Chris Sherman has been doubly busy this year with touring duties for Headtronics, the head-turning side-project he started last year with DJ Logic and Steve Molitz of Particle. The trio had a couple fill-in members on board when it performed at the recent high-profile Moogfest in North Carolina, celebrating the contributions of the Moog synth to music alongside acts like MGMT, DEVO, Massive Attack and Big Boi. DJ Spooky and P-Funk legend Bernie Worrell played with Sherman instead of the unavailable Logic and Molitz — talk about a “deep bench”!
Sherman is fresh off of another run of dates with the original Headtronics lineup (and occasional extra guests) and gigs for the project are already booked for early next year (including another show at Play By Play planned for the end of January). So catch Freekbass, the band, while you can. Tonight’s show details are here.
