Country at War
Aurore Press marks the publication of Country At War: Reflections on the War in Iraq with a release party at 6 p.m. July 7 at Sidewinder Coffee & Tea in Northside. The book is a collection of commentary and art by Greater Cincinnati writers and artists on the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq. Country At War: Contributors include Jacob Adams, Joel Blazer, Chuck Byrd, Mary Anne Cowgill, Gregory Flannery, Matt Hart, Knife the Symphony, Amy Kreitzer, Justin Moore, Chrissy Hensley, Lisa Romie, Christian Schmit, Nathan Singer, Veronica Strickler, Brian Williams, Kathy Y. Wilson and Betsy Young. Copies of the book, available at Sidewinder, Shake It Records and InkTank, are $8. All proceeds from sale of the book will go to the Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust.
Free Peace Camp for Kids
Peace Camp is a two-week free day camp where students ages 6-12 participate in activities focused on conflict management, diversity appreciation, cooperation and effective communication. The program is sponsored by the Center for Peace Education and the Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center. Peace Camp meets from 9 a.m.-noon July 9-20 at McKie Recreation Center in Northside and July 23-Aug. 3 at New Thought Unity Center in Clifton.
Air Quality Hearing
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) holds a public hearing at 2:30 p.m.
July 23 to receive comments on its plan to bring the Cincinnati area into compliance with the federal air quality standard for ozone. The draft plan, recently submitted to the U.S. EPA, includes requirements for cleaner paints and architectural coatings, portable gas cans and consumer products and lower emissions from coal-burning power plants. Document LGBT Discrimination
A coalition of national and statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-gender (LGBT) and civil rights groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio and Equality Ohio, are working together to compile stories of LGBT discrimination. The goal of sharing stories is to help us convince lawmakers that discrimination is real and that we need to pass laws that protect the rights of LGBT people.
