Here's the Whole Beckett E-mail

Local Democrats wasted little time in trying to make some political hay out of this week’s Porkopolis column about an e-mail written by Cincinnati City Councilman Chris Monzel’s chief of staff.

Hamilton County Democratic Party Chairman Tim Burke is urging Monzel, a Republican, to fire his employee, Brad Beckett. Burke wrote that Beckett’s e-mail was inappropriate and contained gratuitous insults.—-

Burke sent the letter today.

Beckett wrote the e-mail Feb. 24 and sent it from a personal account to members of the Vanguard, a secret conservative discussion group. The group meets monthly at the Cincinnati Athletic Club and has existed for “four or five years,” Beckett said.

He declined to reveal who participates in the group.

Beckett’s e-mail used colorful wording to describe several public officials. For example, while referring to a trip to lobby for money for Cincinnati’s proposed streetcar system, Beckett wrote, “Dainty Mayor Mark Mallory and his overpaid & overfed City Manager are in Washington this week to plead their case, ex post facto.”

Monzel told The Cincinnati Enquirer on Wednesday that he might believe discipline was appropriate if Beckett had sent the e-mail from a City Hall account or during work hours, but he didn’t. "I have a different style. But it's his personal time," Monzel told the newspaper.

Although the e-mail was sent from a private account, it was sent at 9:16 a.m. on a Wednesday, raising the question of whether Beckett was at work and sent it from Monzel’s City Hall office.

By popular demand from our readers, CityBeat is providing a full copy of the e-mail here. (Note: The highlighting and pen marks are mine, not Beckett’s, and were made before we decided to post the image online.)

Monzel currently is seeking the Republican nomination to run for the Hamilton County Commission seat being vacated this fall by Democrat David Pepper. Also seeking the GOP’s nomination is Cincinnati City Councilwoman Leslie Ghiz.

Candidates in the Democratic primary are ex-Vice Mayor Jim Tarbell, City Councilman Cecil Thomas and Whitewater Township trustee Hubert Brown, all of who Beckett refers to as “clowns” in his e-mail.
