Brian Joiner, a locally established artist with a national reputation, is this year’s Duncanson Artist-in-Residence at the Taft Museum of Art. His exhibition of works that accompany the residency is newly opened, featuring a range of solutions for integrating landscape paintings and other aspects of the Taft’s permanent collection into multi-media painting constructions. Transcendentalist pastorals are populated by Joiner’s signature running woman — a silhouetted, curvaceous female wearing glittering red heels hijacked from the Wizard of Oz. Constructivist approaches to the painted surface, in which fragments are assembled into a pieced-together picture plane, suggest that these images are in a state of breakdown and that history is an ongoing debate about whether our triumphs or our ills define us — and who gets to decide which is which. The residency continues this week with an artist talk 7-9 p.m. Thursday and a youth studio workshop 1-4 p.m. Saturday when attendees will produce framed landscapes of their own. Both events are free and open to the public but require a reservation.
