Legal Aid Offers Free Clinics

People who want to apply for the state of Ohio's new high-risk medical insurance pool can get free help at two upcoming events.

As part of recent health-care reforms, the state launched the high-risk insurance pool Aug. 1. The program is designed to offer affordable coverage to individuals who have been denied coverage in the past because of pre-existing medical conditions.—-

Attorneys from the Legal Aid Society of Greater Cincinnati will offer their assistance in applying for the program at two clinics, on Aug. 9-10.

To qualify for the high-risk pool, applicants must be a U.S. citizen or national and must be uninsured for at least six months prior to applying.

Also, applicants must be ineligible for coverage under the federal Medicare program, the Ohio Medical Assistance Program, the Ohio Children's Health Insurance Program or an employer-sponsored group health plan.

Further, applicants must have a qualifying pre-existing medical condition with denial of coverage by two insurers or documentation from a health professional of a qualifying pre-existing condition.

The clinics will be offered from 9:30-11 a.m. Aug. 9 at the Panera Bread shop in Hyde Park, 3806 Paxton Ave., and from 2:30-4 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Panera Bread shop in Mason, 5095 Deerfield Blvd.

Reservations aren't required but people who plan on attending should call 513-362-2814 or e-mail [email protected] to ensure adequate applications are available.
