Garth Stein began his post-academic career as documentary filmmaker — he produced the 1991 Oscar-winning short The Lunch Date — but it wasn’t long before his love of the written word took center stage. Stein’s third novel, 2008’s The Art of Racing in the Rain, about a racecar-obsessed dog who thinks he’ll be reincarnated as a human, was a New York Times best seller. Stein discusses his long-awaited follow-up, the recently published A Sudden Light, which centers on a boy who tries to save his parents’ marriage, uncovering a bevy of family secrets in the process, at Joseph-Beth.
