Coming to Shake It Records at 2 p.m. is the story of a record company that reached success by recognizing talent over niche. Jon Hartley Fox, author of King of the Queen City, will be signing his new book and discussing all the talent that came through Syd Nathan’s doors at King Records. In his book, Fox covers the history of King Record’s and its status as a small outsider record company, which was able to be beyond typical record companies of the ‘40s and ‘50s in its diversity to reach its highest success in the ‘60s. In the ‘80s, Fox narrated a series of sixty-minute documentaries for NPR surrounding all the music and arts of King Records and finally published his book, which is the first comprehensive history of King Records. This culturally blind company from Cincinnati, Ohio recorded artists from Redd Foxx, Ike Turner and James Brown to the Stanley Brothers.
