Julia Serano, as her Wikipedia entry succinctly relays, “is a transsexual American writer, spoken-word performer, trans-bi activist and biologist.”

Her latest endeavor, a book titled Excluded: Making Feminist and Queer Movements More Inclusive, opens with this bit of insight: “While many feminist and queer movements are designed to challenge sexism, they often simultaneously police gender and sexuality.” It’s a topic she also investigated in the equally incisive collection of essays Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity

Serano appears 4 p.m. Friday at the National Women’s Studies Association’s (NWSA) annual conference at the Netherland Plaza (35 W. Fifth St., Downtown) and 7 p.m. Friday at Joseph-Beth Booksellers (2692 Madison Road, Norwood). $95-$205 NWSA; free for Joseph-Beth. juliaserano.com.
