In 2012, Margo Taft Stever and Hong Shen (with co-author James Taft Stever) published Looking East: William Howard Taft and the 1905 U.S. Diplomatic Mission to Asia: The Photographs of Harry Fowler Woods in Chinese. The book documents a trip organized by President Theodore Roosevelt’s then-Secretary of War (and Cincinnati native) William Howard Taft, which also included prominent politicians and other luminaries, and features a trove of illuminating photos of a time when the Far East was even more mysterious than it is now. Three years later, with help from University of Cincinnati archivist Kevin Grace, the duo has published an English version of the book. Stever and Shen discuss Looking East at Joseph-Beth.
